Oil of oregano Essential Oregano Oil

Oil of oregano Essential Oregano Oil is a potent essential oil made from oregano oil that is distilled from a member of the mint family, Origanum Compactum. The highest grade of medicinal oil of oregano was originally found growing wild in the Mediterranean. Origanum Compactum is now grown in numerous places across the globe including the US and India. A special steam distillation process is used to extract the oregano essential oil. The distillation process will produce only about one pound of oregano oil from 1000 pounds oregano plant leaves. Because of the difficulty harvesting and growing wild oregano and the small amount of medicinal grade oil extracted per ton of original oregano leaves, oil of oregano is one of the more expensive essential oils to buy.

Origanum vulgare is a second variety of oregano oil that is sold with claims similar to Origanum Compactum, however, Origanum Compactum is considered the preferred species of oregano plants to gather for the premium medicinal, aromatherapy and therapuetic grades of oil of oregano essential oil.

Oil of Oregano essential oil contains the following constituents:

    • thymol (should be less than 5%, greater percentages should not be used internally. )
    • carvacrol (60–80+%) the most beneficial component, higher is better
    • para-cymene (5.5–9%)
    • gamma-terpinene (3.5–8.5%)
    • Beta- Caryophyllene (2-5%)
    • myrcene (1-3%)

Pure essential oil of oregano has been difficult to find online. Dr. Cass Ingram, author of The Cure is in the Cupboard states, “the problem is that the commercially available (oregano) oil is almost exclusively marjoram oil or thyme oil.” These herbs are separate plants having different medicinal properties and are mislabeled as oregano oil. Thymus capitus is an edible herb but the oil from the same plant can be toxic with serious side effects!

When choosing to buy oil of oregano, be sure to buy from a reputable merchant that sells “100% pure Origanum Compactum oregano essential oil” with a certificate of analysis available upon request. The oil of oregano constituent properties must be high in carvacrol and very low in thymol. Clinical trials have found that high levels of carvacrol in oil of oregano can destroy or inhibit many strains of parasites, fungi and bacteria.

Oregano oil should be diluted before applied to most skin areas or under the tongue. You may use olive oil, coconut oil or a carrier oil of your choice. If no instructions are available for your application, a 50/50 dilution will eliminate a chance of irritation. Oregano oil does not have synthetic carvacrol and to qualify as pure oregano essential oil of medicinal grade, it must be sold by botanical name only.

Oregano oil is not recommended to those on blood thinning medications. If you are pregnant or nursing you should not use oregano oil without conferring with your doctor. A drug resistance is not known to develop against naturally-occurring antibiotics such as oil of oregano and garlic.

Oil of oregano is the natural super potent germ killer known as a “cure all” of home remedies throughout the Mediterranean, now the world with claims of killing fungus, parasites, molds, virus and bacteria. Jean Valnet, author of “The Practice of Aromatherapy,” declares that oil of oregano is so potent that it has the ability to sterilizing sewage! In addition to medicinal qualities, oregano oil is highly desired for aromatherapy and therapeutic purposes.
