Oregano oil, Origanum vulgare and Origanum compactum

Oregano oil is derived from two members of the mint family, Origanum vulgare and Origanum compactum

using a steam process to extract oil of oregano from the leaves and flowers of this bushy perennial herb of the (Lamiaceae) mint family. This therapeutically beneficial oil is produced from indigenous oregano that grows in the Mediterranean mountainous regions.

For the last 4,000 years, the Oregano herb has been used as a medicine by healers and doctors all over the world. Origanum vulgare is the most common but Origanum compactum is highly sought after and usually more costly as it is mostly wild harvested from the mountains of Spain and Greece.

The ancient Greeks were among the first to take advantage of oregano’s medicinal qualities. The ancient Greeks and Romans had a profound appreciation for oregano oil, using it for various aromatherapy and medicinal uses. The Greeks termed the spice origanos, meaning “delight of the mountains.” After the Roman occupation of Greece, the Romans adopted the use of oregano oil and were responsible for the extensive spread and use of this oil all over Europe and Asia. The cultivated oregano herb found itself grown from China to the Middle East.

The Chinese used oregano oil primarily for medicinal purposes. Oil of oregano found popularity in United States, after veterans of World War II returned home with samples and remedies. Europe has used oregano oil internally and topically for 2000 years, where the Middle East claims the use and benefits of the essential oil of oregano for over 4000 years.

Dr. Oz says, “stock your medicine cabinet with oregano oil, a must-have holistic cure.”

The oregano plants are harvested only when the Carvacrol, (a phenol that attributes most of the health benefits, with beneficial antioxidant effects) is at its highest levels, optimally at or above 80%. These healing phytochemical compounds or phenols called Carvacrol have powerful antimicrobial properties that have been shown to assist breaking through the outer cell membranes that help protect bacteria in your immune system. Carvacrol (antimicrobial properties) and Thymol (a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties) make the oil appear golden yellow to dark amber, with an ardent spicy odor.

which will result in better health.

The University of Arizona in an animal study revealed that the researchers found that oil of oregano can help kill norovirus. Oregano oil is also a listed as a premier antiseptic essential oil in aromatherapy because the proportion of phenols are the highest of all aromatic plants.

This oil should be diluted with at least 50% coconut or olive oil as pure oregano is slightly caustic. A small skin test should be done before using the oil undiluted. Herbalist, Michelle Lynde, recommends a ratio of one part oregano oil to three parts carrier oil when diluting.Oregano oil is NOT advisable for children and infants. Nursing or pregnant women are also encouraged to consult their physician before using oregano oil topically or orally.

Carvacrol has been proven to reverse or reduce various virus, bacteria, super bugs, and fungus.

Oil of Oregano Remedies described in the “The Miracle of Wild Oregano

Dr. Cass Ingram’s description of Wild oregano is the most powerful natural medicine known to man.
The historical use of wild oregano, including the fact that this is the healing “hyssop” of the law (of the Bible).

This wonderful essential oil is made from two plant genus, Originum Compactum and Originum Volare. Dr. Ingram also reports that this oil, Originum Volare, was tested against aggressive germs, including the cold, flu and even bird flu viruses. In all cases the wild oregano oil destroyed the viruses. Wild oregano helps: reverse digestive complaints; boost the immune system; cleanse the body of dangerous germs, incl

uding fungi, yeasts, bacteria, and viruses; preserve the body from aging and disease because of its potent antioxidant action; and protect people of all age groups from common illnesses, including infants, toddlers and even pets.

A comparative study of the traditional use of oregano-like herbs in the Mediterranean region provides convincing evidence that the hyssop of the Bible is the carvacrol chemotype of the plant Majorana syriaca. The ancient tradition of ritual use of this plant gave rise to two cultures of condiments: za’atar in the Middle East and oregano in Europe. The flavor of the original hyssop was the determining factor in this development and remained unchanged in oregano and za’atar throughout the centuries.

Inscribed on clay tablets thousands of years old (found in the Mid East), were instructions on how to “anoint” (or purify) those attending religious meetings. “Hyssop” (mentioned in the Bible and now known as the ancient herb Oregano) was used by boiling water that had the oregano leaves in it, then rinsing the hands and feet of the participants with this potent mixture. The powerful antiviral, antibacterial properties of oregano would naturally destroy any possible infections that might have been inadvertently carried into these sacred meetings
The oil extracted from the culinary herb is considered similar to the oil extracted from marjoram and basil, all belonging to the Labietea (mint) family of plants. The miraculous virtues of oregano oil are attributed to the amount of carvacrol and thymol the oil actually contains. Carvacrol and thymol are the active ingredients giving the oil its reputable antiseptic properties.

There are several varieties of oregano, Origanim Compactum . However, the wild oregano, Origanum Vulgare, native to the south coast of Turkey and Greece on the Mediterranean Sea is used for its miraculous medicinal properties, typically having combined carvacrol and thymol levels as high as 90 percent in some plants, depending on the location of the harvest, distillation methods and the time of year harvest takes place.

Oil of Oregano: An herb for all seasons
In Steven Foster’s book Herbal Renaissance, he claims oregano oil has “been employed to treat toothache, infections, indigestion, whooping cough, bronchitis, diarrhea, insect bites, nervous tension, rheumatism, earache, coughs, colds and the flu.”

True oil of oregano offers many exciting remedies to a variety of ailments.

The Cure is in the Cupboard, a book by Cass Ingram’s, he notes that “wild oregano is a veritable natural mineral treasure-house, containing a density of minerals that would rival virtually any food.”
The wild oregano is rich in a long list of minerals that includes manganese, calcium, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, and boron. Vitamins C and A (beta carotene) and niacin also are contained in oregano. The mineral content alone, shows why oregano is such a valuable commodity.

Steven Foster and Cass Ingram attributes the “fungicidal and worm-expellant properties” of oil of oregano to carvacrol and thymol claiming that these two phenols work synergistically and that infinitely more potent than commercial phenol in microbial killing power.”

All of this helps make oregano oil a significant factor in treating internal and external fungi including athletes foot. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can be improved with the application of oregano oil as well. Ingram explains that “oil of oregano outright destroys all variety of fungi and yeasts, regardless of where they reside.”

Dr. Mercola inserts his comments here:
I highly recommend adding oregano oil to your arsenal of natural healing tools, as it has a wide range of uses. This herbal oil is a powerful antimicrobial that can help fight off infections. Oregano oil also has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Other ideal uses for oregano oil are:8
• Treating foot or nail fungus. Put a few teaspoons of oregano oil in a basin of water and soak your feet in it. You can also dilute the oil (mix a drop with a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil), and then apply it on your nails or skin.
• Help in killing parasites and easing infections. Dilute the oil (mix a drop with a drop of a carrier oil such as coconut oil), and place it under your tongue. Hold it there for a few minutes, and then rinse it out. Repeat this at least four times a day.
• Alleviating sinus infections and colds. Put a few drops of oregano oil in a pot of steaming water, and then inhale the steam.
I also encourage using the antiseptic powers of this herbal oil to clean your home. Here’s one way how: combine four drops of oregano oil with 10 drops of lemon oil and a quarter-cup of white vinegar, and then add to a bucket of water. Use this mixture to wipe and clean surfaces.9
Composition of Oregano Oil
Oregano oil is high in phenols, which are natural phytochemical compounds with beneficial antioxidant effects. The two most abundant phenols in it are:
• Thymol — a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties. It helps boost your immune system, works as a shield against toxins, and even helps prevent tissue damage and encourages healing.
• Carvacrol — found to be effective against various bacterial infections, such as Candida albicans, staphylococcus, E. coli, campylobacter, salmonella, klebsiella, the aspergillus mold, giardia, pseudomonas, and listeria.
Other healthful compounds in oregano oil include:
• Terpenes — known for their powerful antibacterial properties.
• Rosmarinic acid — an antioxidant that prevents free radical damage and has shown promise in treating allergic asthma and preventing cancer and atherosclerosis. It also works as a natural antihistamine that helps reduce fluid buildup and swelling caused by allergy attacks.
• Naringin — inhibits the growth of cancer cells and helps boost the antioxidants in oregano oil.
• Beta-caryophyllin (E-BCP) — this substance inhibits inflammation and is also beneficial for conditions including osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis, as well as metabolic syndrome.
Nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, manganese, copper, boron, and niacin are also found in oregano oil.
Benefits of Oregano Oil
Oregano oil has wide-reaching health benefits, but is most associated with respiratory and immune system health. It is known for helping prevent and treat infections, such as:
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bacteria like E. coli, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.13
• Respiratory infections brought on by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria strains.14
• Yeast infections, even those that are resistant to the commonly used antifungal drug Diflucan.15
• Parasitic infections caused by the amoeba giardia — it was even found to be more effective than antibiotics like Tinidazol.16
• Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection — A team of Indian and British researchers found that oregano oil has strong antibacterial properties that can help kill this deadly superbug.
Oregano oil has also shown promise in preventing food-borne illnesses caused by pathogens like listeria, salmonella, E. coli, and Shigella dysenteria. Adding it to foods not only helps kill the bacteria, but may also alleviate food poisoning symptoms.
An animal study from University of Arizona researchers also found that oregano oil can help kill norovirus,18 which causes gastroenteritis.
Oregano oil is also a prized antiseptic essential oil in aromatherapy because its proportion of phenols is said to be the highest of all aromatic plants. Aside from using the steam method to help relieve coughs and other respiratory illnesses, you can also use it to:
• Ward off insects. Carvacrol in oregano oil works as a natural insect repellant. Try putting a few drops on outdoor furniture, or apply a diluted mixture on your skin when heading outdoors.
• Relieve bug bites and rashes, including poison ivy rash. Apply oregano oil diluted with olive oil on the affected areas.19
• Help heal cold sores, dandruff, and other skin conditions. Some experts also advocate using a diluted version to treat acne and rosacea.
• Ease sore throat. Simply add a few drops to a glass of water. It can help alleviate toothache as well.
• Help relieve muscle and joint pain, sprains, and cramps20
How Does Oregano Oil Work?
The compounds in oregano oil work together to provide the antimicrobial effects this oil is so well-known for. Carvacrol is its most important component, and is responsible for many of its health benefits. Carvacrol has powerful antimicrobial properties, and has been shown to help break through the outer cell membranes that help protect bacteria from your immune system.
Oregano oil can either be applied topically or ingested, depending on the condition you’re using it for. However, I advise against using the oil full-strength, as it can irritate your skin. Do not apply it to broken skin or open wounds.

Oregano oil is meant for short-term use only and, if using orally, it should be taken in small doses of four to six drops for only seven to 10 days.

In addition to fighting against bacteria, various fungi, and parasites, Oil of oregano is useful As Ingram asserts, “oil of oregano’s antiseptic powers are immense…it inhibits the growth of the majority of bacteria, something that prescription antibiotics fail to accomplish.” In the case of parasites, oil of oregano has had success neutralizing protozoans, amoebae and worms.
Oregano may help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. Of all the plants in the mint family, Oregano is the richest in antioxidants. Free radical reactions are most likely involved in inflammation, degenerative arthritis and the aging process in general. Oregano contains six compounds that are expectorants; four anti-asthmatic compounds; seven that lower blood pressure; and nineteen antibacterial compounds.

Additional uses for oil of oregano are unlimited even being used to relieve diarrhea, intestinal gas, and digestive problems, as well as sore throat and breathing difficulties. Oregano oil should be in everyone’s first aid kit to help neutralize bee stings and many venomous bites until medical attention can be reached. Oil of oregano has even been used as a treatment for diaper rash, dandruff, and other skin disorders.

Although the medicinal oil is not used in cooking, it is used both internally and externally. Since 100 percent pure oregano oil is extremely strong, it is recommended that it be diluted with 100 percent pure extra virgin olive oil — one part oregano oil to ten parts olive oil.

Oil of oregano remedies.

1. Relief from inflammations, internal or external; 2. can neutralize a wide range of spiders, scorpions, bees, ants and snake bites and stings; 3. natural antiseptic, can treat various painful lesions and pain disorders; 4. mucolytic, helps to mobilize and thin mucous, useful in lung disorders; 5. anti-tussive, halts cough and eases spasticity of the lung tubules; 6. anti-spasmodic, obliterates tightness and spasms of muscles; 7. its greatest attributes are its anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and anti-microbial properties.

Diseases including arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, lupus, ulcerative colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, gastritis, and Crohn’s disease are often treated with pharmaceutical drugs that suppress symptoms rather than treat the cause of the problem. Many chronic diseases are also complicated by persistent infections. Since antibiotics will not work for these conditions, it is nutritional and natural antiseptics therapies that are the answer.

Commercially available (oregano) oil are commonly marjoram oil or thyme oil.” These herbs are separate plants having different medicinal properties and are mislabeled as oregano essential oil. Thymus capitus is an edible herb but the oil from the same plant can be toxic with serious side effects!

It takes 500 pounds of wild oregano to make one pound of essential oil, you would expect to pay much more for the finest oregano oil available. I paid $17 for a one ounce bottle of oregano oil (30 ml.) and after using it for two weeks, the bottle still looks full.

This potent oil should be in everyone’s “survival kit”.

Over 800 studies reference carvacrol in PubMed, the world’s #1 database for scientific evidence-based literature, which emphasizes that research is quite supportive of its healing capacity. These studies show that carvacrol in essential oil of oregano has been proven to reverse or reduce: Bacterial infections, Fungal infections, Parasites, Viruses, Inflammation, Candida, Allergies, Tumors.

This past December, Journal of Medicinal Food published a study that evaluated the antibacterial activity of oregano oil against 5 different bad bacteria. After evaluating the anti-bacterial characteristics of oil of oregano it showed significant anti-bacterial properties against all 5 species bacteria.
Interestingly, the highest activity was observed against E. Coli, which suggests that oregano oil should be routinely used to promote gastrointestinal health and to prevent deadly food poisoning.
Two years prior, researchers from Pakistan published similar results in the journal Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia in addition to proving oregano oil’s ability to kill cancer cells of various types
Methotrexate (MTX) is a drug commonly used to treat a wide array of issues from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis. By evaluating various markers in the sciatic nerve in mice, it was observed for the first time that carvacrol decreased the pro-inflammatory response in mice being treated by MTX.
Researchers from the Netherlands have shown that oregano oil can also “prevent bacterial overgrowth and colonization in the large intestine during oral iron therapy.”
Oregano oil taken internally in Europe for thousands of years is usually diluted with olive oil, water, or coconut oil. Pregnant women should use caution when taking internally and only use if instructed by their physician.
According to Dr. Edward F. Group, “Hands down, oregano oil is one of the best natural supplements you can get. It’s produced from the perennial herb oregano and loaded with free-radical-crushing antioxidants. A growing body of research has shown that oregano oil offers many positive health benefits and is one of the most potent natural remedies in existence.”
